Artificial Tooth Roots

Implants are titanium posts that replace the roots of your natural teeth.

Anchored in Your Jawbone

Our dentists will surgically insert implants into your jawbone. Over time, the biocompatible titanium will fuse with your bone and become a permanent part of your anatomy.

Supporting Restorations

Once implants become securely integrated with your jawbone, they can support natural-looking crownsbridges, or dentures. While traditional dentures are prone to slipping or shifting, implant-supported restorations remain firmly in place as you bite, chew, and speak.

In this animation, we demonstrate how a single missing tooth is replaced with an implant-supported crown. The implant is inserted into the jawbone. Next, a connecting piece called an abutment attaches the crown to the implant.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Functional Benefits

Because dental implants are placed into the jawbone, they prevent your restoration from slipping out of place. You can enjoy restored oral function, clear speech, and an unrestricted diet thanks to this stability.

Health-Related Benefits

Dental implants act as tooth roots, maintaining stimulation to the jawbone and protecting your oral health. This is essential to prevent jawbone atrophy, which can cause further tooth loss and create an aged appearance.

What Is Jawbone Atrophy?

Many patients don’t realize the full consequences of tooth loss. Besides the obvious effects (like a gapped smile and a reduced ability to chew), the loss of natural teeth also leads to jawbone atrophy.

When a tooth is lost, that tooth no longer stimulates the jawbone. As a result, the nearby bone tissue begins to weaken and shrink. This can lead to additional tooth loss and an aged, sunken, and unhealthy facial appearance.

Because traditional bridges and dentures don’t replace the roots of teeth, they do nothing to address this deterioration process. Only dental implants integrate with the bone and replicate the stimulation of natural tooth roots.

The Dental Implant Treatment Timeline

When you visit our dental offices for an initial consultation, we will use our state-of-the-art 3D CT scanner to capture incredibly detailed images of your jaw. Our doctors will analyze these images to determine your candidacy for implants and plan your surgery.

Some patients require preparatory bone grafting to qualify for implant surgery. You may require dental bone grafting if your jawbone has deteriorated due to tooth loss. We can perform this procedure at our offices in Bridgewater and Staunton.

On the day of your implant surgery, our dentists will numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. We also have sedation options available for anxious patients. Once you are comfortable, our doctors will create small incisions in your gums and insert each titanium implant directly into the jaw. We can place a temporary restoration right away, so you will walk out of our office with a full and functional smile.
Once the implants are in place, a healing period of four to six months is required for the titanium to fuse with the jawbone. This process is known as osseointegration.

After osseointegration has taken place, a second minor procedure is required for our dentists to attach abutments to the implants. Abutments are small connector pieces that attach the dental restorations to the implants. After the abutments are attached to the implants, a second healing period is required for the gums to heal around the abutments.
Finally, you will return to our Harrisonburg-area offices one more time so we can attach your permanent crown, bridge, or denture. We use lifelike restorations that look just like natural teeth. You will leave this appointment with a functional, healthy-looking smile.

To Qualify for Dental Implants, You Should:

To Qualify for Dental Implants, You Should:

Have Sufficient Bone Tissue

Substantial jawbone tissue is required to support dental implants. If you have suffered jaw atrophy, you may need to undergo dental bone grafting before receiving implants.

Be in Good Oral & Overall Health

Oral health issues such as periodontal disease should be resolved before dental implant treatment. Because conditions like diabetes can increase the risk of complications, they should be under control before treatment.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can increase your risk of serious complications because it impairs your body's ability to heal. You will need to refrain from smoking before surgery and during recovery. Ideally, you should plan to break the habit permanently.

All-on-4 Dental Implants

A Groundbreaking Solution for Complete Tooth Loss

A Groundbreaking Solution for Complete Tooth Loss

If you are missing a complete arch of teeth, the All-on-4 approach might be right for you. With this innovative method, Drs. McIntyre and Whiting can attach a durable, natural-looking denture to only four implants.

With the All-on-4 approach, two posterior implants are placed at an angle in the jawbone, maximizing contact with remaining tissue. This allows the denture to be supported by fewer implants, and it also means that patients who have suffered a small degree of bone atrophy can qualify for the treatment without preparatory bone grafting.
