What are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are thin, custom-made shells typically made of porcelain or composite resin that are designed to cover the front surface of teeth. They are a popular cosmetic dental option for individuals looking to improve the appearance of their smile. Veneers are specifically used to address dental imperfections such as chipped, stained, discolored, misaligned, or irregularly shaped teeth.
Porcelain veneers are crafted from high-quality dental porcelain, which closely resembles the natural appearance of tooth enamel. This material offers a translucent quality that reflects light similarly to natural teeth, creating a remarkably lifelike and aesthetic result. Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to stains and can withstand normal biting and chewing forces. They are typically more durable and longer-lasting compared to their composite resin counterparts.
Composite Veneers also known as direct veneers, are made of tooth-colored composite resin material. Unlike porcelain veneers, composite veneers are directly applied to the teeth by the dentist in a single visit. The resin material is sculpted and shaped to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. Although composite veneers may not be as stain-resistant or long-lasting as porcelain veneers, they can still provide a significant improvement in the appearance of the teeth.
The Veneer Procedure
Obtaining veneers typically involves multiple visits to the dentist. The process begins with an initial consultation where the dentist evaluates the patient’s oral health and discusses their goals and expectations. The dentist will take X-rays, photographs, and impressions of the teeth to create a customized treatment plan.
To prepare the teeth for veneers, a small amount of enamel is usually removed from the front surface. This ensures a proper fit and allows the veneers to bond securely to the teeth. In some cases, minimal or no enamel removal is required, depending on the specific circumstances and the type of veneers being used.
Once the teeth are prepared, the dentist will take impressions, which serve as a blueprint for the dental laboratory to create the custom veneers. Temporary veneers may be placed to protect the teeth while the permanent veneers are being fabricated.
During the final appointment, the dentist will carefully bond the veneers to the teeth using a specialized adhesive. Any necessary adjustments will be made to achieve optimal fit, comfort, and aesthetics. The veneers are then polished, giving them a natural luster and completing the smile transformation.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Veneers?
Enamel Strength
We need to remove a small layer of surface enamel before we can place a dental veneer. Therefore, your tooth needs to have enough healthy structure, or else the shells will lack the proper support. If you have thin tooth enamel, we may recommend an alternative procedure like dental crowns that conceal flaws and provide structural support.
Oral Health
Good oral health is the foundation for any beautiful smile. Before you can undergo cosmetic dentistry treatment we will need to address tooth decay, periodontal disease, or other issues that affect your health.
Bruxism
If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), you may not be the best candidate for veneers. Patients with bruxism can wear down the porcelain shells, damaging the results and weakening their teeth. You can still get veneers if your condition is mild. Wearing a mouthguard at night can also help prevent excessive wear.
Goals
Dental veneers permanently alter your natural tooth structure, so treatment is a life-long commitment. While the results can last for a decade or more, the shells will eventually need replacement. If you are not looking for a long-term commitment, you may be better suited for an alternative cosmetic treatment like dental bonding.

Maintaining Your Veneers
Brush and Floss
Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Gel toothpastes are typically a good choice for porcelain veneers. Floss daily. Good oral health will keep the veneers looking pristine, and prevent dental health issues and tooth discoloration.
Avoid Bad Dental Habits
Habits like biting on your fingernails, using your teeth as tools, and excessive clenching and grinding can damage your veneers or cause them to become detached.
See the Dentist Regularly
Visit the dentist every six months, as recommended by the American Dental Association, to have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined. During the appointment, we can also check the condition of the veneers.

I underwent 4 hours of heavy dental work under medicated sedation due to my dental anxiety plus 2 months ago I also did the same treatment and both times went extremely well. The Drs were nice and explained everything so my anxiety would stay in check. I’ve been a patient at Smiles for Life for over 6 years and also took my mother who suffers from advanced Parkinson’s to them for full dentures and they were fabulous 💙.

Cathy is delightful and skilled hygienist that I’ve counted on for nearly 20 years. Wouldn’t still be traveling nearly an hour from my new home to this dentist office if I didn’t have full confidence in Cathy.
