What Is Invisalign® Treatment?

Diagram showing how Invisalign clear braces straighten teeth for patients near Harrisonburg and Waynesboro.

Instead of using metal brackets and wires, this option uses clear, removable aligner trays to correct a wide range of orthodontic issues. Every two weeks, patients use a new set of aligners, which gradually move the teeth and bite into proper alignment. Most patients go through 20 to 30 sets of aligner trays before the entire treatment process is complete. For qualified individuals, Invisalign® treatment can be just as effective as traditional braces.

Why Choose Invisalign® Treatment?

Invisalign® clear braces offer benefits to our patients in Greater Harrisonburg and Staunton that other forms of orthodontic treatment simply can’t provide:

Discreet

The smooth plastic aligner trays fit snugly over teeth and are virtually invisible, allowing you to smile and speak without feeling self-conscious.

Comfortable

The trays are more comfortable than traditional braces because the smooth surfaces do not irritate the soft tissues of the mouth.

Removable

You can conveniently remove the aligners when you eat so you can enjoy a full range of foods, and brush and floss as normal.

Fewer Appointments

This option also requires fewer checkups than braces, which typically require tightening appointments every four weeks.

Insurance Coverage

Many insurance plans cover Invisalign. Coverage will vary based on your policy so we can handle contacting your provider for additional details.

Are You a Candidate for Invisalign® Treatment?

Invisalign® Treatment for Teens

Teens are excellent candidates for Invisalign® treatment. Many teenage patients prefer the simplicity and comfort of Invisalign® aligners to metal brackets and wires. The invisible aligners also help teens avoid feeling self-conscious about wearing metal braces.

Invisalign® Treatment for Adults

Adults can also benefit from the comfort and discreetness of Invisalign® clear braces. The aligner trays can straighten smiles without being conspicuous, which means few if any interruptions at your job, at social engagements, or while completing your daily routines.

Additional Considerations for Invisalign® Treatment

Traditional braces may be more suitable for severe malocclusion, crowding, or gaps. During a consultation, our dentist will carefully evaluate your bite to recommend the right course of treatment.

Because Invisalign® trays are removable, you must be consistent and fully dedicated to the process. If it is likely that you will forget to wear your clear aligners, another form of orthodontics may be more appropriate for you.

The Invisalign® Treatment Timeline

What to Expect

Digital Scanning

To prepare for Invisalign® treatment, your dentist will take 3D digital scans of your mouth.

"In about 12 to 18 months, you can have a straighter smile and improved confidence."

Preview Your Results

We strive to make sure our patients are fully informed about the procedures they choose, so we will show you a digital preview illustrating the projected movement of your teeth.

Aligner Fabrication

Your unique plan will be sent to the Invisalign® lab, where technicians will craft your aligners from clear, smooth plastic. Your customized aligner trays will be based on the digital images taken at our office so they fit precisely and produce your desired results.

Wearing the Aligners

Once the trays are finished, you will wear each set for about two weeks. With their slightly different shapes, the aligners exert mild pressure on your teeth, gradually straightening your smile. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and wear your trays for 20 to 22 hours a day.

Cleaning the Aligners

You must also clean the aligners daily to prevent decay, gum disease, and tooth discoloration. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water to remove any debris that accumulates. It is also important to brush and floss daily.

Follow-Up Appointments

You will return to our office about every six weeks so we can monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed.

Completing Treatment

Once you have worn your last pair of aligner trays for two weeks, your treatment is considered complete but you will still need to wear a retainer to keep your results. At this point, you may wish to undergo whitening or another cosmetic dentistry treatment to further enhance your smile.

Invisalign® FAQ

How Long Does Invisalign® Treatment Take?

For most patients, Invisalign® treatment takes about a year to a year and a half to complete. That means in about 12 to 18 months, you can have a straighter smile and improved confidence. Keep in mind that treatment times can vary based on how misaligned a person’s teeth are.

Does Wearing New Aligners Hurt?

Switching to a new clear aligner can cause some soreness in the first few days as your teeth shift position. The mild pain doesn’t last long, however. It can be helpful to switch to a new aligner before going to bed in order to sleep through the initial discomfort.

If I Have Braces Now, Can I Switch to Invisalign® aligners?

Maybe. Some patients have been able to switch from wearing braces to Invisalign® clear braces without any issues. It depends on your treatment plan, and how much tooth movement is required. If this idea sounds appealing to you, be sure to discuss this option with your dentist or orthodontist.

Will I Need a Retainer After I've Completed Invisalign® Treatment?

A retainer is common after orthodontic care to prevent teeth from shifting out of their corrected alignment. We make a retainer for every Invisalign patient, and your post-treatment needs may vary. As part of the consultation process, we will review what happens once treatment is over, and how we can best maintain your dental health for years to come.
